What is the best season for diving in Indonesia?

As Indonesia is such a large country, it is possible to dive all year around depending on the area of Indonesia. The best season for diving in Komodo is June-October, which is when MV Queen Scuba offers trips to this destination. The best season to dive in Raja Ampat is from November to March, this is when MV Queen Scuba Liveaboard offers diving in this destination.

What diver certification level is required to dive in Komodo or Raja Ampat?

We accept all levels of divers onboard, we try to offer dive sites that are suitable for the guests diving experience and abilities. However, some of the dive sites on these trips have strong currents, our dive crew will give a detailed briefing before each dive, if they believe a site is beyond your diving capabilities they will advise you and do their best to provide an alternative site if possible. If you are an Open Water Level diver, we recommend you complete the Advanced Open Water Diver Certification during the liveaboard trip.

What is the temperature of the sea and what wetsuit do you recommend?

The Flores Sea with its usually clear blue waters, great visibility has water temperatures of approx 26-28 degrees (northern dive locations) – a 3-5 mm Shorty is okay with most guests comfortable with a 3-5mm long. The Sumba Sea (southern dive locations) has an average temperature of approx 22-24 degrees – the awesome diving let's you forget about the cooler waters! Raja Ampat also has sites with warm tropical temperatures and sites with cooler waters. Think about a 5mm long possibly adding a vest or renting a Shorty to go over the top if you feel the cold. Hood, gloves and booties are strongly recommended for these cooler waters.

There are regular international flights to these gateway cities from many European cities, Singapore, and Kuala Lumpur. The second step is to purchase a domestic airline ticket from your Indonesian gateway city (Bali, Jakarta, or Manado) to Jefman Airport (airport code SOQ) in the city of Sorong. Sorong is your gateway to Raja Ampat while in Indonesia. Upon arriving Sorong you will be met at the airport or your hotel and escorted to the liveaboard.

Please note that the Bali and Manado gateways usually require an overnight stay before proceeding to Sorong. Using the Jakarta gateway you can usually get to Sorong in one day.

For this reason Queen Scuba Liveaboard would like to help you with your domestic flights within Indonesian whenever possible. When it is not possible for us to coordinate your flights or if you prefer to organize your own transport we can recommend a local travel agent who can help you with all the details. Please contact us for further details.

The Flight Process:

• Book Your International Flight to One of the Indonesian Gateway Cites (Bali, Jakarta, Manado)
• Book You Domestic Flights Within Indonesia to Jefman Airport (SOQ) in Sorrong

Please note that to enter Indonesia you must have a minimum of 6 months before expiration left on your passport and one full clean page for your visa on arrival.

Queen Scuba Liveaboard recommends that when you travel to Raja Ampat you incorporate two extra hotel nights into your travel plans. One hotel night on arrival between the international and domestic flights, and one hotel night on your journey home between the domestic and international flights.
